The Foundation Stone for the project was laid by the Chief Minister on 25th November, 2009. The one of a kind project is spread over an area of 9.5 acres and it houses the 135 ft statue of Lord Chenrezig as the center of attraction along with skywalk, grand stair case, water body with the magnigicent eight- serpants (Klu- Chen- Gyet) and variety of religious artifacts all designed and constructed as per the principles of Vastu Shastra or the Science of Architecture.

As mentioned by CM, the ‘Chenrezig Shingkham Riwo Potala’ completes the ‘Tsolung Turlsom’ of a Buddhist altar in Sikkim with Guru Rimpoche statue at Samdruptse, Namchi and Lord Buddha statue (Tathagatha Tsal) at Rabongla. The soon to be inaugurated Project would attract Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world as Sikkim would be the only state to have the mega statues of all the three principal deities in Sikkim in India.
