Sikkim was conferred the National Award as the Best State/Union Territory for Comprehensive Development of Tourism amongst Jammu and Kashmir and North Eastern state's of India. The award was given by MoS (IC) Tourism, Government of India Shri K.J.Alphons. It was stated that Sikkim has set new benchmarks for responsible travel in the country. Homestay has rapidly made way for sustainable community based tourism in less developed areas, while eco friendly policies have lent new vigor to the virgin Himalayan wilderness that drapes the region's mountains areas of Sikkim.

The National Tourism Awards covers an extensive range of categories to award State Governments & Union Territories, Hotels, Travel Agents, Tour Operators & Transport Operators, Individuals and other Private Organizations in recognition of their contribution towards promoting Tourism in their respective fields. Conceptualized with the objective of encouraging healthy competition in promoting tourism in the country, the National Tourism Awards have been a much-awaited annual event since its inception over a decade ago. At the ceremony this year, the awards were presented by the Hon’ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind and presided over by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism and Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Shri K J Alphons, at a formal event in the Ministry of Tourism, Vigyan Bhawan. The efforts made by Sikkim towards the inculcation and promotion of nature-friendly concepts like Eco Tourism and Responsible Tourism was appreciated this year, and the state was thus awarded the ‘Most Responsible Project / Initiative Award’. The opening of a new airport at Pekyong will certainly boost the tourism sector along with the growth of the other industries and the need to travel to Sikkim by air through Bagdogra Airport will be reduced. Further as the Pekyong airport is landlocked and surrounded by international borders aligning with Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and China the airport should unanimously be upgraded to an international status. This will enhance connectivity to sectors with the neighboring SAARC countries and also one is given to understand that Pekyong will be connected with Paro Airport, Bhutan effective January 2019. The 100th airport opening in Sikkim is a highly commendable effort owing to engineering marvels achieved while building the airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sikkim on September 23 to inaugurate the state's first airport in Sikkim at Pakyong, it is going to be historical event for development of tourism and a new destination for Buddhist and trekking mountaineering in Sikkim tour travel taxis and hotels and homestay in Sikkim and Darjeeling along with West Bengal tour operators.

A memento of the first ticket and boarding pass of the SpiceJet flight from Kolkata to Pakyong Airport, was presented to Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling by the Representatives of SpiceJet at Mintokgang on September 7. The first commercial flight to Pakyong Airport is scheduled to be launched on 8th October, 2018 by SpiceJet, and would be flying from Kolkata. Thereafter, the return journey will be from Pakyong to Kolkata. "I hope the people of Sikkim as well as visitors to the State take the benefit of this facility" writes Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri. Pawan Chamling in his official page.
